JANUARY 05 2012 | OCEAN ECOSYSTEMS, OCEAN ENERGY,
BY PETE STAUFFER
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) will hold public meetings on the proposedSan Onofre Ocean Energy Project on January 24 at 1 PM and 7 PM at the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Hotel Doheny Beach (34402 PCH, Dana Point). The meetings will solicit public comments on the Environmental Assessment (EA) the agency is preparing, including input on the preliminary list of issues and alternatives to be addressed in the EA. FERC would also like input on any studies that would help provide a framework for collecting pertinent information on the resource areas under consideration.
In addition, on Wednesday, January 25there will be an Environmental Site Review of the project. Interested participants should meet no later than 9 AM at the parking lot located just inside the entrance to San Onofre State Beach. For more information please contact Kenneth Hogan at kenneth.hogan@ferc.gov
The San Onofre Ocean Energy Projectwas proposed by JD Products and would utilize Ocean Wave Electricity Generation (OWEG) units to convert the energy from ocean waves into electrical power. The proposed project area location is approximately 8 square nautical miles and indicated by the box shown in the map.
The Surfrider Foundation is a formal stakeholder in the permitting process representing recreational users. If you have input that you would like to share with Surfrider, please email these to pstauffer@surfrider.org. You may also provide comments directly to FERC and JD Products by sending emails to: Kenneth.Hogan@ferc.gov and chong.kim@jdproductsllc.com.
For more information on the project, please visit the FERC website and search for docket number P-13679.
